The Eddie Aikau Invitational, often simply referred to as 'The Eddie,' is one of the most prestigious and legendary big-wave surfing competitions in the world. Held at Waimea Bay on Oʻahu's North Shore in Hawaii, the event honors the legacy of Eddie Aikau, a revered Hawaiian lifeguard, surfer, and waterman who famously risked his life to save others and ultimately sacrificed himself in an effort to seek help for his stranded crew during the Hokule’a voyage in 1978. Given that it requires specific conditions to run—namely, a massive swell—it's a rare and special occasion when 'The Eddie' takes place.
Full of jaw-dropping rides and dramatic wipeouts from some of the best big wave riders in the game-- Luke Shepardson, Billy Kemper, Jamie O'Brien, Ian Walsh, Jake Maki, Ross Clarke-Jones, Joey Cadiz, and eventual winner Landon McNamara-- this quick recap will give you a sense of the action and feeling of a contest that above all, commands respect. We also hear from Uncle Clyde Aikau, who keeps the spirit burning brightly.
