In a world where a single day at a ski resort deflates the pocketbook like few other forms of recreation or entertainment, The Ruby Hill Rail Yard is a much welcomed breath of fresh air for the snow enthusiast community.

Looking for a way to hit the slopes without the hassle of I-70 traffic? The Ruby Hill Rail Yard in Denver, Colorado, is back for the 2025 season, offering free skiing and snowboarding to all. Opening on Sunday, January 26th, the park is a collaboration between Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Winter Park Resort. First launched in 2007, Ruby Hill Rail Yard has grown into a beloved urban winter sports destination.
The park features a variety of terrain park elements, including rails, boxes, and other jib-friendly features, all designed by Winter Park Resort’s park-building experts. Ruby Hill doesn’t have chairlifts—instead, participants hike back up after each run, adding to the playful nature of this urban park. The park’s accessibility and community vibe have made it a hit, with over 6,000 skiers and snowboarders visiting during its second season.
Ruby Hill Rail Yard is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with lighted night skiing and snowboarding available from 4 to 9 p.m. Free equipment rentals are offered on weekday evenings from 4 to 9 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., making it easier than ever for newcomers to try out the sport. Denver Parks and Recreation aims to keep the park open until March, weather permitting, ensuring weeks of winter fun in the heart of the city.

The 2025 season will also feature several free community events to engage riders of all skill levels. Highlights include the Burton Mystery Series on February 8th, the Snow Pirates Co. Event and Competition on February 22nd, the CoreNation Rail Jam on March 1st, and Denver Learns to Ride Day on the last Saturday before the park’s closure. These events provide opportunities for both seasoned riders and beginners to come together and celebrate the sport.
Winter Park Resort contributes snowmaking equipment and technical expertise to ensure the park remains operational, even during warmer spells. Additionally, over 35 volunteers dedicate their time to maintaining the park and ensuring a smooth experience for visitors. With its commitment to providing free and accessible outdoor recreation, Ruby Hill Rail Yard embodies the spirit of community-focused winter sports.
